VPN and proxy extensions for Chrome

As of the catalog pass of , this list holds 12 extensions, ordered by current audience and led by VPN for Chrome: NordVPN proxy protection (15.0M users).

A VPN extension sends your browsing through somebody else's servers and usually asks to read and change data on every site you open. That makes it the one category where who runs it matters more than any speed claim, and where a free listing has the most to explain. We cannot audit a provider's logs; what we can show is the audience, the rating, the access each one declares and how long it has been around.

Candidates are Chrome Web Store listings whose title names the job (“vpn”, “proxy”, with at least 20 000 users and at least 100 ratings). We then add up to 6 listings the catalog judges to do the same job even though their title never says so, because ranking by who writes the keyword best is backwards. Everything is ordered by current audience, which our own crawler reads from the store up to 2 times a day. Ordering by audience is not a verdict on quality: how many people kept an extension is what we can observe, and how good it is for you is not. On this page it added nothing: everything the catalog judged close enough was already found by title.

In the store's categories

This list follows what people ask for; the store files the same extensions under its own categories:

Is one of these yours?

The same catalog powers the panel: watch a competitor, get told when their numbers or permissions move, and see your own installs next to theirs.
